Dear Thinkers,

This weekend I was given the opportunity to write for a political website called CBC (Conservative Blogs Central). Here is a copy of the article that I wrote for their blog. If you choose you can view the original article at http://conservativeblogscentral.blogspot.com/2013/03/progressives-attack-football.html

I’m sure some of you already know, but there was a huge amendment to the NFL rule book this week. There has been much said about to the implications that this will have on the game, but very little has been mentioned in regards to the bigger picture. And for that, my friends, you don’t need to be a football fan to throw a red flag (no pun intended).

As of now, the rule states that running backs and defenders cannot collide helmet to helmet, using the crown of the head, in the open field. The rule’s intentions seem to support a noble cause: Player Safety. And I don’t think anyone would refute the importance of player safety. But then again, couldn’t we say the same thing in reference to obesity?

Progressives. They always seem to know best. That’s why Mayor Bloomberg wants to ban large sodas. He says that you can’t take care of yourself, and apparently, the Mayor of New York City is the only one who can be a”health expert” in the city. (I mean, he looks so healthy doesn’t he?) This act of divine knowledge is exactly what all the dictators and kings have claimed to have throughout history.  Well let’s be honest, you don’t have the title of mayor, therefore, you must not be able to understand that soda isn’t good for you. Sadly, this is their reasoning, and it’s the same reasoning that is used when people attempt to change the game of football as we know it.

The game of football has been progressively changing within the last decade. The NFL has instated law after law, penalty after penalty, all in an effort to reduce the violence of the sport. Football, is a great parallel to America, because it has gotten to the point that there are just too many rules. In the year 2010 alone, 40,000 new laws were instated in the United States. It seems you can hardly breathe without breaking some kind of law now (if you don’t believe me, read through the thousands of laws and you will realize that you are not the perfect citizen you may think you are-it’s scary). Football players feel the same way! They are getting paid to go out and hit the opponent as hard as they possibly can…but wait, now they will get in trouble for doing that? It sounds ridiculous.

Just like you my friends, I  have the free will to wake up and go to the gym, or instead go to 7-11 and grab a Big Gulp. And let me remind you that these players, who play in the NFL, are big boys. To put it blatantly, big boys have the ability to think for themselves and they have a decision to make as well. Yet, THEY elect to play the violent sport, with the conscience understanding that there is a great probability of getting hurt. And mark my words, whether you like football or not, the NFL is a microcosm of the USA. If you want to understand which way the country is headed, turn on the TV set and watch a game. We Americans claim to be free, but our politicians just don’t want us to get hurt….maybe they should decide what we can and can’t do….how noble of them. After all, “Big Brother is always watching out for you.”
